Land of the Rising Suntory

Suntory's logoHello everyone, happy 2014 – we’re sorry about 2013, but normal service is now resumed. Sláinte, and so on and so forth. Apologies too for the title, which is desperately unoriginal. I can rarely resist indulging in a terrible pun, especially if it’s lamentably obvious, and I shan’t make an exception now.

And now to business, literally, because today’s big news is that Suntory, the Japanese drinks group whose whiskies have picked up a string of prestigious awards in recent years, has agreed to buy Beam Inc, in a deal worth almost £10bn. Adding Jim Beam, Knob Creek and Maker’s Mark (not to mention Courvoisier) to a portfolio that already includes Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki and Bowmore will make for the world’s third-largest producer of distilled drinks. The amalgamate company will have net sales exceeding £2.6bn.

As this BBC article points out, Suntory also has Lucozade, Ribena and Orangina Schweppes in its extensive portfolio. I suppose you could make some particularly appalling cocktails using only Suntory-owned beverages, if you’d had enough to drink to begin with…
